Abstract

This research is intented to investigate students' understanding of the generic structure, and language features reflected in their recount texts, and to determine the quality of their writing whose teachers used a genre-based approach. And this research is expected to be a source of information regarding students' recount texts using a genre-based approach in class. This research employed a case study with a qualitative approach. This research was taken at the ninth grade of MTs Yasipa, Bandung with nine students as the participants and the teacher. To obtain the data, the researcher used document analysis to know their understanding and the quality of students’ writing of recount text. This study shows a result that Using genre based approach in writing class improves students’ grammar in writing recount text. The students were given plenty of oportunity in the process of planning their writing. They were able to decrease their error in writing. It resulted in the better quality and quantity of the compositions. The students felt more confidence in writing. In addition, it was known that the scores of all five aspects of writing covered content, organization, vocabulary, and mechanics increased thoroughly. And students understand well three elements of the generic structure, those are Orientation, Events and re-orientation. The students can arrange well the three elements of the generic structure recount text. In conclusion, the findings shows that the research on independent practice pointed out that all of nine students' texts were categorized into a very good level in writing cohesive and coherent text after they were taught by teacher in class by using GBA. From the nine texts, there were 16 errors of grammar and 2 errors of spelling.
