Abstract

The subject focus of this research is the fantasy adventure formula used in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy. This research uses the theory of adventure formula as the main theory. The main focus of the study in the researcher's work is the representation of fantasy adventure depicted in The Dark Knight Trilogy films. Adventure is one of the genres in popular literature. This research also incorporates the ideas proposed by Cawelti's formula. To ascertain the veracity of the research, the researcher must answer two fundamental questions: (1) What are the representations of fantasy adventure presented in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy? (2) How is the setting that builds fantasy adventure in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy? In this research, the researcher used a combination of Structuralism approach along with qualitative method for data analysis. The major source of data for this study is Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Film Trilogy, while the secondary source of data consists of the scripts in this film. The results of the findings in this study show that fantasy films provide a new point of view regarding the orientation depicted in fantasy films in general such as the depiction of creatures and other mythical stories, while this study depicts a different fantasy with presenting realistic nuances in the analysis. The researcher has arrived at the following conclusions based on certain expert theories about the adventurous aspects of fantasy in The Dark Knight Trilogy: (1) Vigilante Hero, (2) Dark and Gothic Atmosphere, (3) Imaginary Aspects, (4) training and transformation, (5) Epic Action Sequences, (6) Batcave Technology, (7) Moral Dilemma. It can be deduced that the success of The Dark Knight Trilogy can be attributed to two aspects. First, the use of a formulaic structure as the basis of the story, which leads to a predictable narrative that is readily enjoyed by readers and viewers.
