Abstract

Social conflict occurs when the main character is engaged in a conflict with society, social structures, or norms within their environment. It involves a clash between individuals or groups with different interests, values, or goals. Social conflict in literary works can encompass class struggles, cultural or religious differences, political tensions, or racial and gender conflicts. This research is related to the topic of social conflict, and its purpose is to explore social conflicts and identify the effects of social conflicts depicted in the Star Wars prequel trilogy on the character Anakin Skywalker. The researcher used qualitative methods, and the primary theories for data analysis were the social conflict theory by Coser (1956) and the social conflict effects theory by Pruitt (2004). From the data analysis, 52 data were found in this study. Out of all the data, they were categorized into various types of social conflicts and the effects of social conflict. Data from various types of social conflict included 9 data of conflict of interest, 8 data of conflict of involving social position, and 7 data of conflict of role. Furthermore, data related to the effects of social conflict consisted of 11 data of difficulty of empathizing, 7 data of lack of trust, 5 data of zero-sum thinking, 5 data of blaming objects attitude. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded the most found of types and effect of social conflict was conflict of interest and difficulty in empathizing. It means the conflict of interest had the effect of difficulty in empathizing on the character Anakin Skywalker. These factors created a character in Anakin who tended to experience conflict of interest in carrying out his duties as Jedi and had difficulty empathizing with Jedi Council. This was one of the reasons why his character’s journey was so complex and ultimately led him down the Sith path as Darth Vader.
