Abstract
Down syndrome (DS) is a complex and highly variable disorder that arises from trisomy of chromosome 21. It is characterized by a lack of mastery of English in individuals with Down syndrome. This study uses a qualitative research methodology that aims to analyze the challenges experienced by teacher who teach English Reading skills to Pupils with Down Syndrome at SMPLB Silih Asih C Kota Bandung. The main phenomenon of this study is to determine the challenges and experiences of teachers who teach English reading skills to children with Down syndrome. This research can propose and evaluate various knowledge strategies and interventions that have been used in teaching English to students with Down syndrome. Theoretically, this research can provide a theoretical basis for the development of teaching methods and strategies for the teaching of English to children who are suffering from Down syndrome. In this paper, we emphasize an overview of Down syndrome, DS-associated phenotypes diagnosis, and management of the disease. The results of this research indicate that observations of learning English reading skills for students with Down syndrome reveal significant challenges faced by teachers in implementing a comprehensive learning process and the challenges of teaching students with Down syndrome require addressing a variety of challenges related to their intellectual, linguistic, and motor skills. Researcher found a variety of methods, such as the use of visual aids, multi-sensory approaches, and adapted materials, can be used to engage students and encourage language development. then suggestions for English teachers, for future researchers, for the education department to pay more attention to education for students with Down syndrome.
