Abstract

Time magazine covers are a fusion of visual and verbal artistry, acting as the first point of contact between a publication and its audience. This study embarks on an exploration of the dynamic interplay of these elements on Time magazine covers in 2022, unveiling their purpose in capturing attention and conveying messages in a rapidly evolving media landscape. The primary objective is to comprehensively analyze the visual and verbal components featured on the covers, elucidating the distinct purpose embedded within each one. Visual and verbal signs serve as potent tools for conveying messages, reflecting cultural context, engaging readers, and effectively communicating the magazine's identity. This research employing a descriptive qualitative approach. The theoretical framework draws from Peirce's Triadic Theory and Saussure's principles, supported by Roland Barthes' insights. The study identified 55 verbal signs and 41 visual signs across 15 data points, underscoring the complexity of Time magazine's cover designs. The research also unveiled a diverse spectrum of purposes, ranging from informing and persuading to inspiring and celebrating, each cover acting as a visual and semantic gateway to the magazine's content, connecting with readers on multiple levels.
