Abstract

Affixation is the process of attaching affixes either before or after a root word. Derivational affixes are the affixation process that can change the word class, or its meaning, or both. Inflectional affixes are the affixation process that does not change the grammatical class of a word, or its meaning, but it changes the grammatical information of a word. The recipe book written by Gordon Ramsay entitled “Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Cookery Course” is used as the research object. The purpose of this research are to find out the types of derivational and inflectional affixes on cooking terms in a recipe book entitled “Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Cookery Course” written by Gordon Ramsay, and to analyze the derivational and inflectional affixation process on cooking terms in a recipe book entitled “Gordon Ramsay’s Ultimate Cookery Course” written by Gordon Ramsay. This study applied the descriptive qualitative method and employed the theory of Katamba (2005). This research found 45 words of derivational affixes with 3 words included in derivational prefixes, 37 words included derivational suffixes, and 5 words included in derivation which have multiple affixes. Derivational suffixes was found seven types, those are verb to noun (6 words), verb to adjective (11 words), noun to verb (1 word), noun to adjective (13 words), adjective to noun (3 words), adjective to adverb (1 word), noun to noun (2 words). Additionally, the inflectional affixes found in this research are 35 words with 23 words included in plural nouns, 4 words included in present tense (3 rd person singular), 5 words included in progressive tense, 1 word included in past tense, and 2 words included in comparative adjective. The conclusion of this research presented that most of the affixation process of derivation changed the word category and the word meaning, but several affixation processes of derivation only change the word class without changing the word meaning. Additionally, the affixation process of inflection did not change the word category or the word meaning, because the affixation process of inflection only changed the grammatical meaning of the words. Lastly, through the tree diagram presentation, it can be known the roots of words and the affixes, and also the process of combining the basic words with the affixes.
