Abstract

Literary adaptation involves changes in the process of transferring some elements from the source text into the new medium, one of the examples is the adaptation of the narrative elements which are the base elements that build the literary work itself. This study analyzes the adaptation process from the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott adapted to the film Little Women by Greta Gerwig with the main purposes of the research: (1) To know how the narrative elements adaptation process in Little Women Novel (2014) and Little Women Film (2019). (2) To identify the differences of the narrative elements in Little Women Novel (2014) and Little Women Film (2019). This study used the qualitative descriptive method combined with the theory of comparative literature by Bassnett (1993) and the theory of adaptation by Hutcheon (2013). The findings of this study were the narrative elements adapted, namely character &characterization (32 data), plot structure (31 data), Symbol (5 data), and theme (4 data). This study also found the adaptation process, namely modifications (15 data), additions (12 data), and subtractions (5 data). In conclusion, the differences found in the narrative elements, namely plot structure, character and characterization, symbol, and theme from the novel and film were the consequences of the process of adaptation that involved some adjustment to fit with the new medium.
