Abstract

Punctuation is a basic skill in English writing that students have to master. This is because its importance in the context of meaning. It avoids ambiguities and unclarity. Moreover, punctuation helps readers to feel what the author is willing to express and tell. Incorrect punctuation will decrease the formality of academic writing paper. Through these kinds of issues, the study aims to investigate the most frequent of punctuation mark error that students always make in academic writing, especially in form of mini research project, and (2) to analyze the factors behind the errors made by students in academic writing. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach and conducted with 35 students' writing projects and 8 of them were interviewed. The participants were the 4th semester students of English Education Department UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The results of the study:(1) the most frequent punctuation error that made by students are comma in omission and addition, capitalization in misformation and parentheses in misordering, (2) students feel confused in the use of punctuation and its rules. This is due to their lack of knowledge and its ignorance to learn punctuation comprehensively.
