Abstract
This research discussed the struggle theme and motives in Jack and the Beanstalk and Timun Mas folklore. This research aimed to discuss the form of struggle themes carried by two folklores, and also to explained similar motives of both folklores. There are two folklores compared in this research, so it used comparative studies method. In this research, researcher used narrative function theory by Vladimir Propp (1968) and motives analysis by Stith Thompson (1946). This research used objective research because in analysing the theme and motive, researcher focuses on analyse the character and plot which are the two elements are including as the intrinsic element, so it used structural analysis by focusing on the entire content of the two works that being researched. The results of this research were: 1) Jack and the Beanstalk and Timun Mas folklores has similar form of struggle themes 2) The struggle theme carried by two folklores are the struggle to face the life problems and the struggle to fight against the giants; 3) the two folklores have five similar motives including mythological, marvels, ogres, tests, and the death motives. Based on this research, it was concluded that Jack and the Beanstalk and Timun Mas folklore have similar form of struggle theme and similar of motives. So, the similarity that occurred in folklore originating from different countries is a possible thing.
