Abstract
This research analyzes a novel titled Looking for Alaska written by a bestselling author, John Green. John Green's Looking for Alaska presents a story depicted through conflicts during adolescence. Therefore, the author analyzes the trauma and conflict of the main character Miles Halter in the novel Looking for Alaska by John Green. The purpose of this study is to find out the trauma experienced by the main character and to find out the conflicts experienced by the main character in this novel, Miles Halter. To find out these traumas and conflicts, two problems are formulated. The first problem is "how does the author portray the trauma of the main character in the novel looking for alaska?". The second is "how does the main character Miles apply self defense mechanism to eliminate anxiety in the novel Looking for alaska?". To answer the problems that have been formulated, the author uses library research as the method of this research. The main source of this research is a novel entitled Looking for Alaska. Meanwhile, the secondary sources of this research are books, e-journals and e-articles that contain related theories. The first conflict faced by Miles Halter is the fear of conveying his feelings, which is categorized as approach - avoidance conflict. The second conflict is the fear of losing Alaska, which is categorized as approach - avoidance conflict. due to his inability to express his true feelings to Alaska. The third conflict The third conflict is when he believes that his mistake is the cause of Alaska's death, which is considered an avoidance - avoidance conflict. The fourth conflict is in solving the mystery behind Alaska's death and is classified as a dual approach - avoidance dual approach - avoidance conflict. In dealing with these conflicts, Miles utilizes an avoidance style to manage the conflicts. Finally, this study provides some suggestions for future researchers and English Lecturers. Future researchers can use Looking for Alaska to analyze Miles Halter's struggle in uncovering the mystery behind Halter's struggle in uncovering the mystery behind the death of Alaska.
