Abstract

Turn taking strategies is a way used by speakers in managing a conversation. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct the research on this topic, with the aim of analysing the types and functions of turn taking strategy in the conversation between Akash and Steve on Steve’s TV Talk Show. This research used qualitative descriptive method and the main theories used to analyze the data were from Stenstrom (1994) and Sacks (1974). Based on data analysis, the total data found were 42. There were taking the turn (16 data) which consisted of starting up, taking over, and interrupting, Holding the turn (13 data) which consisted of filled paused and verbal fillers, silent pause, and lexical repetition, expressive Yielding the turn (13 data) which consisted of prompting, appealing, and giving up. Meanwhile, for the functions of turn taking strategies acts, the data were found two for each functions, such as for starting up, taking over, interrupting and filled paused and verbal fillers, silent pause lexical repetition, prompting, appealing and giving up. From the findings, it can be concluded that among the three types of turn taking strategy, taking the turn was the most found. It means that each speaker tried to invite and initiate the floor in the conversation in order that the conversation could run smoothly. Meanwhile, percentage of the functions of turn taking strategies was found equal. Those functions were to explore speakers’ intention in initiating and emphasizing their statement to be understood by other speakers, respecting the speakers’ statement and rejecting other speakers’ statement.
