Abstract
Plot in literature work is a tool to construct and depict events or occurrences into a story or part of a story. The main purpose of a plot is about how to develop the reader's emotions based on the sequence of cause, goal, cause, and resolution. This is because the way the writer writes plays a significant role in this. So, it states that the plot is written to evoke emotions in the reader according to a series of such plotlines. Research questions are: 1) How is the plot categorized in William Butler Yeats's Purgatory? 2) How is the plot development influenced by the main character in William Butler Yeats's Purgatory? This research used Norman Friedman's plot theory. The researcher used qualitative methods to describe and draw conclusions from the analysis results. Meanwhile, the data was taken from Purgatory play by William Butler Yeats. Based on the findings, there were two types of plot categories in the play according to Norman Friedman's theory: tragic plots and educational plots. Then, the second finding in this research was the development of the script influenced by the main characters. The results of this research showed that the main characters played a role in influencing the plot development, including the influence of events experienced by the main characters, the influence of actions taken by the main characters, the influence of the main characters as spectators, the influence of the main characters as actors, the influence of the main characters' interaction with the environment, and the influence of the main characters' interaction with other characters.
