Abstract
This research is motivated by a lack of student awareness in learning reading comprehension and a holistic approach is still rarely used in learning reading comprehension. This research aims to determine the process of implementing reading comprehension activities for young learners based on a holistic approach and to determine students' perceptions of the implementation of reading comprehension activities based on a holistic approach in the seventh grade of junior high schools in Indonesia. A case study was selected to collect data. Data collection was carried out through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Class observations and teacher interviews were used to explore the process of reading comprehension activities based on a holistic approach. In addition, by using student questionnaires and interviews, this research explores students' perceptions of the implementation of reading comprehension activities based on a holistic approach. In selecting participants, purposive sampling was used. An English teacher was selected to observe and interview. The total number of questionnaire participants was thirty seventh-grade students, and five of them were selected for interviews. The results of this research show that implementing reading comprehension activities based on a holistic approach for class VII students has positive and negative impacts on reading learning. Students have a positive perception of the implementation of reading comprehension activities based on a holistic approach. This can be seen from the results of student questionnaires and interviews which show that students feel happy and interested in the reading comprehension learning provided by the teacher in class. However, in applying reading comprehension based on a holistic approach, students have a negative perception of having difficulty understanding the content of the reading and knowing the meaning of each word. This is caused by students' different backgrounds, such as social environment, cultural environment, learning style, and level of intelligence. In conclusion, reading comprehension based on a holistic approach for seventh-grade students in Indonesia has had a positive impact, although students still face difficulties understanding reading content and reading English words correctly. Therefore, this research expects teachers to always update their knowledge and skills to be able to create learning experiences that are in line with current developments and have a positive impact on overall student learning.
