Abstract

Language style is one of the many variations of the language used in society. Different speaking styles can be used by people in different situations, such as formal corporate discourse, casual conversations with friends, or personal talks with a spouse or family. Language style refers to the vocabulary that a certain group of people chooses to employ in a given situation or setting. The way that someone speaks might reveal a lot about their past. Language function is one of the key factors that, in addition to language style, is crucial to communication. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to identify the language styles and functions that are employed in the @folkative Instagram account. This study combines a content analysis methodology with a descriptive qualitative method. Data was gathered from the @folkative Instagram account. The account provides the most recent daily news on Instagram. The first research question about language style is addressed in this study by applying Martin Joos' theory, while the second research problem about language function is addressed by applying Holmes' theory. According to the research's findings, the @folkative Instagram account uses four out of five linguistic styles. These are the following: formal (33 data), consultative (8 data), casual (25 data), and intimate (1 data) styles. Since the frozen style is inappropriate in this situation, it is not used in this research. In the meantime, the @folkative Instagram account contains five out of six different language functions: expressive (4 data), directive (11 data), referential (30 data), metalinguistics (14 data) and phatic (18 data). There is no phoetic function in this study because poetic language style is not appropriate to use in this condition. Lastly, the researcher hopes that this study may benefit future researchers as well as themselves and the reader. Furthermore, it is advised that future researchers delve deeper into language function and style.
