Abstract
This study aims to identify the factors that support students to use swear words and to find out how students feel when using those swear words. This research was conducted on the class B students of the English Literature study program, the batch of 2020 UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This research employed a qualitative research method with a case study design where the data is described narratively. To identify the factors and feelings of using the swear words, 10 items of interviews were administered to six respondents. The results of the study showed that the use of swear words is dominantly triggered by negative emotions, such as anger and discomfort, which are reinforced by the influence of entertainment media and surrounding culture. Interestingly, two of the participants realized that their use of swear words was much supported by game teammates. The use of these words can lead to a sense of relief but also regret. The reactions of the people around and the mood after swearing vary from equality to silence, influenced by the specific situation. These findings emphasize the importance of awareness of the long-term impact of swearing on social perceptions and interpersonal relationships, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to understanding and managing sensitive communication behaviors.
