Abstract

A mutual comprehension between participants during a conversation is essential for effective communication to ensue and guarantee that the intended information will be received in a suitable manner. Neglecting to execute the aspect appropriately may lead to divergent interpretations among the participants. The purpose of this research is to analyze the types and functions of flouting maxims as they appear in Ariana Grande's interview videos on Zach Sang Show. The data are obtained from the set of each individual title and subsequently undergoes qualitative analysis utilizing a suitable data analysis methodology as outlined by Creswell (1998). The categorization of the data are based on the theory by Grice (1975). Additionally, Grice (1975) proposes this notion regarding emergent functions, and Leech's (1983) theory provides further support for it. The study's findings revealed a total of 37 data points, which were categorized into four distinct types: flouting the maxim of relevance (9 data), flouting maxim of quantity (14), flouting the maxim of manner (8 data), and flouting the maxim of quality (5 data). In following events of that, the data led to the function as a consequence of the violation of maxims, and there are 5 data that are representative of each maxim violation that occur. As a result, this research helps improve understanding of the various types of flouting maxims that may occur, as well as how to deal with these concerns in order to communicate successfully by lowering the number of misunderstandings during conversation.
