Abstract
This research delves into the pronunciation of English consonant speech sounds (/f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/) among members of the Sense community within the English Literature Study Program at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The study is grounded in the significance of speech sounds, referred to as phonemes, in language communication and comprehension, particularly in reading aloud. It addresses the gap in research concerning the pronunciation of these specific consonant sounds within this particular community. The aim of this research 1) to find out the pronunciation of English consonant speech sounds of f, v, θ, ð are produced by members of Sense community when reading aloud English text. 2) to analyze the English consonant speech sounds of f, v, θ, ð which are mispronounced by members of Sense community when reading aloud English texts. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research utilized a combination of instruments including reading aloud tests, and observation sheets. Data were gathered from English texts produced by 14 Sense members and analyzed to assess pronunciation accuracy and identified any mispronunciations. The findings revealed that while the Sense community members demonstrated the ability to accurately produce the targeted consonant speech sounds in various word positions, there were instances of mispronunciations observed. Nevertheless, the overall proficiency level suggests a comparable skill level to native speakers. Thus, the consonant sounds f, v, θ, ð obtained by 14 members of the Sense community for the 2022-2023 period there were 3 sound positions; initial, medial, and final. Such as example, the final, medial, final of the sound /f/ was “find, briefly, life” based on comparisons with native English speakers. And there was mispronunciation of English consonant sounds /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/ which were replaced to /f/ to /p/, /v/ to /f/, /θ/ to /t/, /ð/ to /d/ (forty-porti is an example of a mispronunciation of /f/). Additionally, fostering a supportive learning environment and encouraging participation in language immersion activities are suggested strategies for continuous improvement. Overall, this research contributes to the understanding of English consonant pronunciation within the Sense community, aiming to enrich knowledge and promote effective application of pronunciation skills within the English Literature Study Program, thereby enhancing students' communicative abilities in English.
