Abstract

This research aims to understand how humor occurs by violating the maxim of the cooperative principle and then look at the differences in men's and women's use of humorous language. The object of research in this study is the speech of several men and women comedians from YouTube channel Dry Bar Comedy, which is a stand up comedy show. This research uses qualitative methods with comparative analysis in comparing the humorous language of men and women in selected stand up comedy videos. There are four videos used to analyze maxim violations that create humorous situations, including two videos of male comedians and two videos of female comedians. The theory used in this research is Herbert Paul Grice's theory regarding the cooperative principle to adjust maxim violations that occur in the speech of comedians. Then, in the comparative analysis, comparing the language of men and women adapts to Robin Lakoff's theoretical concept regarding language and gender. Based on the results of the analysis, comedians prioritize how to make the audience laugh at their speech, hence they do not pay attention to the principles of good communication according to Grice in the cooperative principle. Violations of the four maxims (quantity, quality, relevance, manner) were found in the first and third videos. Then in the second and fourth videos there is no violation of the maxim of relevance. Violations of these four maxims produce humor in several ways, including incongruity, superiority or relief. Men and women differ in creating humor. Some differences can be seen in the language features they use. Language features used by men include using taboo or swearing language, selecting themes more boldly. Meanwhile, the language features used by women include lexical hedges, tag question, and intensifiers.
