Abstract

This research aims to investigate the adventure formula aspects that are being represented while also redefine the adventure formula that is stated by Cawelti and Saricks in the movie Barbie (2023) which is directed by Greta Gerwig. This movie presents a thrilling adventure story line while having a female heroine as the main character instead of a hero. Therefore, the researcher comes up with two inquiries: 1.) What are the adventure formula aspects that are being represented in the Barbie movie? 2.) How are these aspects support the redefining of the adventure formula in the Barbie movie?. To accomplish the results, this research identifies the aspects of adventure genre that exist in the movie by using the adventure formula theory by Cawelti (1976) and Saricks (2009). Meanwhile, in redefining the adventure definition there are six aspects that have been investigated to take a conclusion out of the analysis. The method of this research is a qualitative method. The scene and dialogue were being used to get the expected results. From this paper, there are 119 data on the aspects of the adventure formula that is divided into six categories, pacing, story line, characterization, setting/frame, tone/mood, style/language. There are also found 53 data that helped redefine the adventure mostly formula from the characterization and story line where it has a strong heroine instead of hero. The conclusion of the movie Barbie (2023) is that the heroine who is also have dangerous adventure throughout the story helped reshaped the definition of the adventure formula.
