Abstract

This research tried to examined the heroic journey aspect in two popular films Iron Man (2008) directed by Jon Favreu. The researcher used Objective approach with Comparative method. The researcher used dialog in the script and scenes in the film to obtain data in the form of screenshots and dialog in the script. This film tells the story of the heroic journey taken by Tony Stark as Iron Man. The second film is Blue Beetle (2023) directed by Angel Manuel Soto, this film tells the story of a young man who is chosen to be the host of an ancient artifact and must undergo his destiny to go through a heroic journey as Blue Beetle. Heroic Journey is a stage that must be passed by the main character in a story and contains three main stages; Departure, Initiation, Return. Based on this explanation, the researcher proposes two problem formulations related to characterization of characters and how it affects their heroic journey. The purpose of this study is to analyse how a heroic journey is affected by differences in characterization. To achieve these results, the researcher identified characterization and setting to find out the depiction of the two characters, as well as aspects of the heroic journey in the two films using Joseph Campbell's heroic journey theory. In the Iron Man (2008) there are stages: The call to adventure, refusal of the call, supranatural aid, the crossing of the first thresshold, the belly of the whale, the road of the trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as temptress, apotheosis, ultimate boon, refusal of the call, the magic flight, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds and freedom to live. In this film there are no stage of atonement with the father and rescue from without. While in the Blue Beetle (2023) film there are stages: the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supranatural aid, the crossing of the first thresshold, the belly of the whale, the road of the trials, the meeting with the goddess, atonement with the father, apotheosis, the ultimate boon, rescue from without, the crossing of the return threshold, master of the two worlds and freedom to live In this film there are no stage of woman as temptress, refusal of the call dan the magical flight.
