Abstract

Indonesia has implemented the character education value in the educational system. Character education is a program that has become the primary aspect of the 2013 curriculum, which has been socialized by the government since 2010. Building character education can be integrated into teaching and learning activities and teaching and learning materials. One of the supporting requirements is the textbook. Textbooks can be used as instructional tools to help students learn character education values. That is why choosing a textbook with Indonesian character education is essential. This study is intended to analyze a character education in an English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris,” created by the Ministry of Education, and how the teacher at Senior High School integrates character education with the students. Then this study is written to achieve the objectives: (1) To analyze the character education value represented in the images and texts of the 2013 curriculum English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for the twelfth grade of senior high school; 2) To find out how the teacher integrates the “Bahasa Inggris” textbook’s character education value into the student. This study applied qualitative research, particularly multimodal discourse and descriptive qualitative. The participant is a senior high school teacher. Multimodal discourse, document analysis, and Interviews were used to obtain the data. Multimodal discourse analysis and document analysis were conducted in the “Bahasa Inggris” textbook using the 18 theories of character education by the Ministry of Education. Moreover, interviews were conducted to determine how the teacher integrates character education with the students. Furthermore, the interview data were collected using open-ended questions according to the integrating theory by the Ministry of Education and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive method. The finding shows that after analyzing three images and texts selected, the English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris” for twelfth Senior High School contains 12 characters of education which appear, namely religion, Discipline, Appreciation, Patriotism, Curiosity, Communication, Responsibility, Nationality, Joy of Reading, Environmental Care, Tolerance, and Social Care. There are six education characteristics that do not appear: Honesty, working hard, creativity, independence, Democracy, and Love of Peace. Moreover, after conducting the interviews with three senior high schools, they made conscious decisions about the learning techniques and programs they introduced in the classroom, whether explicitly or implicitly. In conclusion, the appearance of character education in the “Bahasa Inggris” textbook is based on the chapters.In contrast, the appearances of the character education class from the Interview are based on how the teacher integrated them. Finally, after doing the analysis, it can be seen that the result of this textbook is appropriate to be used as a guidebook for the curriculum 2013 teaching and learning.
