Abstract

This research entitled “Politeness Strategies Used by the Main Characters in Persona 4 Game" is aimed to find out the types of politeness strategy and the factors influencing the main characters to employ those strategies according to Brown and Levinson's theory. Politeness strategies refer to the linguistic and social techniques used to maintain harmonious communication and positive social relationships. In conducting conversations, politeness is an important concept to be raised so that the image of oneself or the speaker is impressed well and also keeps the self-image of speakers respected. This research is a pragmatic study and used a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are taken from the utterances of the conversation used by the main characters in the Persona 4 game. The research result shows that the most dominant types of Politeness strategy used by the main characters in this game is Positive Politeness strategy. This strategy is used by the main characters to avoid offense, build good relationship, enhance cooperation, highlight friendliness, minimize FTA debt, maintain positive face of the hearer, and maintain mutual friendship and solidarity together in creating a supportive atmosphere. Furthermore, there are two main factors influence the characters to employ certain politeness strategies, namely social distance and relative power factors, and the most dominant is social distance factor. The main characters used politeness strategies due to social distance, which refers to close or distant relationships. This strategy is most dominant among those with equal or lower power, as they often engage in mutual relationships with friends and family.
