Abstract

This study aims to analyse the denotation, connotation, and myth of images and text on Instagram posts. The research objects in this study are images and texts from several Instagram posts on the @iuliastration account with self-love topics. This study uses a qualitative method with descriptive analysis through an interpretative approach in interpreting the denotative, connotative, and mythical of self-love of images and text in selected Instagram posts. There are 20 instagram posts used to analyse denotative, connotative, and myth of self-love. The theory used in this research is the theory of Roland Barthes (1968) regarding denotative, connotative, and myth. The results of the analysis show that images and texts that are interconnected with each other in denotation create direct meaning of sel-love as in the combination of colours of clothing, backgrounds, and some objects loaded. For connotation, an in-depth understanding of meaning is obtained related to the meaning of the colours in the clothes, the background of the place or post, and the combination of several objects. For myths on Instagram posts identified into three categories, namely linguistic message, symbolic message, and literal message. The conclusion is that the application of denotation, connotation, and mythical meanings on Iulia Boschis Instagram account posts is able to produce meanings related to the topic of self-esteem and struggle in life. It makes the delivery of motivation and inspiration for readers so that not only aesthetic understanding but also understanding the meaning.
