Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of irony that influences the comedy genre. Irony, which is one of the techniques often used in film, aims to convey a message through unexpected things and misunderstand the audience, it succeeds in creating a humorous effect and becoming a very important element in comedy theory. The film Luck by Peggy Holmes illustrates that irony can affect the comedy genre. The analysis in this study aims to find the types of irony in the Luck by Peggy Holmes and how irony can affect the comedy genre. Researchers use Petrie and Boggs' theory for irony, while the comedy theory used is Abrams' theory. This study uses descriptive qualitative analysis methods and objective literary criticism to analyze the data. The results of the study found an analysis of 68 data consisting of dramatic irony 7 data, irony of situation 4 data, irony of character 12 data, irony of setting 7 data, irony of tone 8 data, cosmic irony 15 data, satirical comedy 7 data, farce comedy 8 data. The data used are scenes and dialogues collected in screenshots from the film. Keywords: Comedy, Film, Irony, Luck.
