Abstract

Conversation analysis is not only about the turn-taking but also about how the participants involved in the conversation respond to the speaker with various kinds of utterances. This research aims to investigate verbal backchannel responses uttered by Zach Sang and RM. Both participants were involved in an interview in which Zach Sang was the interviewer and RM was the interviewee. This research is important to be analyzed because it helps the conversation to run effectively. The data studied was taken from the interview video on YouTube and then transcribed into the dialogue between Zach Sang and RM. The researcher used the qualitative description method to solve the research questions about the types and functions of verbal backchannel responses used in Zach Sang's video interview with RM. The data were collected based on the types of verbal backchannel responses and then the functions were identified. The result showed that all types of verbal backchannel responses based on Iwasaki's theory were uttered by Zach Sang and RM in this video interview. The types of verbal backchannel consist of non-lexical backchannel, phrasal backchannel, and substantive backchannel. From the 44 data found, a phrasal backchannel is the most widely used response in Zach Sang's video interview with RM which reaches 27 data. Substantive backchannel only gets 7 data which means it is rarely used by both participants. In identifying functions, there are seven functions of verbal backchannel responses found in this video interview, namely supporting the idea and indicating agreement, awareness, clarification, exclamatory question or statement, reference, attempted interruption, and waiting for the complete utterance. Zach Sang and RM often used verbal backchannel responses as a function of awareness which reached 17 data. Thus, the usage of these verbal backchannel responses shows that both participants listen to the person who is speaking and express politeness in conversation.
