Abstract
Intensive reading is a kind of reading that is defined as reading at a low speed that demands a greater degree of understanding than extensive reading. It means reading intensively entangle learner reading in detail with specific learning purposes and tasks. But in practice, difficulties occur in the process of this intensive reading activity. So that students cannot understand and interpret the reading material in detail This study aimed to investigated EFL students’ difficulties in intensive reading activities. The qualitative approach and case study design is used to conduct this study. The participants of this study are students of eleven grade at senior high school in Bandung. The data was collected by questionnaire and interview. The result of the study showed that in intensive reading activities there are some of difficulties which are lack of vocabularies, less in self-study exercise, and motivation in reading intensively. The strategy students use is to target the amount of reading completed and try to read intensively with the preferred topic first. In conclusion, most of the difficulties that occur in intensive reading activities are linguistic aspects. The students also lack in motivation to read intensively. The strategies applied by students can overcome difficulties and make intensive reading activities easier.
