Abstract

Interpersonal Metafunction in Manchester United chants is the main topic of this research. Halliday's theory of speech functions and mood types is used in the research analysis. The qualitative method of research is applied. The data are obtained from the www.fanchants.com website. The chant applies the mood type theory, with each clause of the chant displaying one or more of the mood types that it may have. The aforementioned design is applied in speech function theory, where speech functions are displayed according to chants. The study's conclusions are: First, there are 85 declarative moods, 8 interrogative moods, and 21 imperative moods out of 114 clauses in the 36 chants. Second, from 116 clauses in the 36 chants, there are 86 statement functions, 4 offer speech functions, 8 question speech functions, and 18 commands speech functions. From the analysis, the supporters use the statements not only to provide information but also to express their ideas, feelings, protest, and be sarcastic. Besides, The commands are used to make requests and be sarcastic. The question function is used to ask for information. The offer is used when the supporters give some options.
