Abstract
This research analyzes the personality of the main character, Benjamin Button, in David Fincher's film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. The film, recognized for its artistic and entertainment value, presents a unique narrative that encourages reflection on societal issues through its imaginative story. Benjamin Button's character, who ages backward, presents an intriguing case for psychological analysis. This study aims to explore his personality traits using the Big Five Personality Theory and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The descriptive qualitative method is used in this research. This approach involves a detailed analysis of Benjamin Button's behaviors, interactions, and development throughout the film. This study finds that according to the Big Five Personality Traits, Benjamin exhibits characteristics of Openness, demonstrated through his curiosity, unconventional thinking, and artistic sensibilities. Additionally, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs reveals that Benjamin's basic physiological needs are satisfied despite his unique aging process. His safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization needs are also met through his interactions and relationships with other characters. The research highlights a connection between Benjamin Button’s personality traits and his fulfillment of basic needs. His curiosity and openness drive his journey towards self-actualization, showing how his unique condition helps him meet his esteem and self-actualization needs in unconventional ways. This comprehensive psychological analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of Benjamin Button’s character, showcasing the intricate relationship between personality traits and human needs in film.
