Abstract

This study investigates the ideational metaphors in the students’ academic writing projects. Specifically, this study reveals the ideational metaphors in two ways. The first is the realization of transitivity metaphors. The second is on the grammatical shift of ideational metaphor expressions. This study used a qualitative approach with a document analysis as the data source. There are 32 critical academic writing projects written by the students in the fifth semester of the English Education Department. The collected documents were analyzed to find out the ideational metaphors employed in students’ critical academic writing projects. The findings show six types of transitivity metaphors are employed in students’ critical academic writing projects. The transformation of the material process dominates the occurrences of ideational metaphors in the realization of transitivity metaphors with 66.43 percent. Furthermore, this also reveals that 8 of 13 types applied in the grammatical shift of ideational metaphor expressions. Type 2 is the dominant type, achieving 63.26 percent of the total occurrences. In conclusion, the students’ critical academic writing has not achieved balanced employment of ideational metaphors yet. It is compared to the total noun phrases and clauses. Surprisingly, most students have used ideational metaphors in their critical academic writing. In addition, they have applied ideational metaphors through the realization of transitivity metaphors and grammatical shifts in their academic writing projects. Based on the findings, this study suggests EFL students, lecturers, or other academicians should be aware more of grammatical metaphors, let alone the use of ideational metaphors to produce more concise academic writing texts. The lecturer should introduce and explain the ideational metaphors for employment in academic writing for students to write better academic writing texts.
