Abstract

This research examines the types of discrimination experienced by the characters in Beauty and The Beast (2017) film directed by Bill Condon based on the theory of Uli Parulian Sihombing (2009) by including analysis from the cinematography and mise-en-scene side. This film tells the story of a Prince who was cursed because of the discrimination he committed against old women. The aim of this research is to determine the type of discrimination found in films, the causes of discriminatory acts and the impact of discrimination. This research uses a literary criticism method with a mimetic approach to describe acts of discrimination. The results of this research show that in Beauty and The Beast (2017) film there are three types of discrimination, namely discrimination between ethnic/racial groups, discrimination against gender and discrimination against social caste. Apart from that, it was found that the causes of discrimination in films are due to one's psychological defense mechanism, disappointment, experiencing feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem, and discrimination socialization patterns which can have an impact on physical, psychological and social conditions.
