Abstract

The Celebrity Family Feud show, hosted by Steve Harvey, a recipient of the Outstanding Host category in the 2016 Emmy Awards, features various episodes with celebrities competing in a game show format. One notable episode pits the iconic Kardashian family against the renowned West family, both globally recognized for their influence and fame. This study focuses on analyzing the speech acts in this episode, utilizing Searle’s (1969) theory of speech acts to explore the interaction between the host and contestants. The primary objectives of this research are: 1) to identify and classify the illocutionary acts performed by Steve Harvey, and 2) to examine the perlocutionary effects of his speech on the Kardashian and West families. This research applying a descriptive qualitative methodology, in this instance, observes and categorizes the natural, unscripted verbal interactions on the show. The study's approach is consistent with Creswell's (2014) emphasis on qualitative research in natural contexts, allowing for an in-depth analysis of unscripted conversations. The findings reveal that Steve Harvey performed all five types of Searle's illocutionary acts, totaling thirty-four instances. Expressive illocutionary acts were the most frequent (nine occurrences), followed by representatives (eight occurrences), directives (seven occurrences), commissive (five occurrences), and declaration (two occurrences). In terms of perlocutionary effects, emotional responses were dominant, with eleven instances largely attributed to Harvey’s humorous style, which often elicited laughter and positive emotional reactions from the contestants. Behavioral effects were observed seven times, while cognitive effects were notably absent in this analysis. The research highlights the significant impact of expressive illocutionary acts in creating an engaging atmosphere that fosters emotional connections between the host, contestants, and audience. These findings contribute to the broader understanding of speech act theory within the realm of televised game shows, illustrating how the host's communication style, particularly expressive acts, plays a pivotal role in shaping participant interaction and audience engagement.
