Abstract

This study aims to examine the characteristics of the thriller and mystery formula in the screen life film Missing (2023) directed by Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick. This film presents a tense thriller storyline and a mystery that will slowly be solved by the heroine character through digital settings. Therefore, the researcher asks two statement problems: 1. What are the thriller and mystery formula explained in the film Missing (2023) through digital settings? 2. What are the plot rules in the film Missing (2023) through digital settings? This study uses the literary criticism method as part of the qualitative method type. To achieve results, this study identifies the characteristics of the thriller and mystery formula in the film Missing (2023) using the formula theory by Cawelti (1976) and characteristics of thriller and mystery formula by Saricks (2009). Each scene and dialogue are used to obtain the results used in examining the formula and plot rules in the film Missing (2023). From this thesis, there are 106 data on aspects of the thriller and mystery formula which are divided into six categories, there are pacing, story line, characterization, frame or setting, tone or mood, style or language, and also found 8 data that help find plot rules in the story line, including foreshadowing, suspense, and surprise. The conclusion of the Missing (2023) film is that the use of digital settings as the screen life film, successfully shows an interesting, tense plot like the thriller genre, and how the heroine character solves all the mysteries.
