Abstract

Expressive speech act is a type of speech act to expresses the speaker's feelings, emotions, or attitudes. It is often used in daily communication, especially in the speech of adults in children's television programs. The object of this study is the speech delivered by five adult hosts on one of the famous children's television programs, namely Hi-5. This study focuses on exploring the types of expressive speech acts and convivial functions contained in the speech. In analyzing the problem, the researcher uses Searle & Vandervaken's (1985), speech act theory to analyze expressive speech acts and Leech's (1983) theory to analyze the convivial function in the speech. This study uses a qualitative method, which emphasizes a deeper understanding of a problem. The researcher uses data collection techniques in the form of videos on YouTube. The data analysis techniques used in this study are reading data, identifying data, categorizing data, describing-interpreting data, and conclusion. From the results of the research analysis, it can be concluded that there are forty utterances spoken by five adult presenters in expressive speech acts, namely six utterances of thank, three utterances of lament, seven utterances of praise, eighteen utterances of compliment, four utterances of greeting, and two utterances of welcome. The convivial function that focuses on positive social goals is found in thank, praise, compliment, greet, and welcome. Meanwhile, the lament speech act is not included in the convivial function because it only contains negative disappointment and sadness. The results of this study indicate that compliment utterances are most commonly found and are in line with the convivial function for adult speech to children which will help them in forming positive and educational interactions between adults and children.
