Abstract

Language is an important means of communication, pragmatics is the study of aspects of the use of meaning and language that depend on the speaker, receiver and other features of the speech context. One of important topics/themes in Pragmatics is Deixis which plays an important role as it allows us to relate language to the situation and context in which it is used. This study aims to identify the types and to investigate how used of deixis in Muhammad Ali`s interview about being Muslim in America. The analysis is conducted using mixed method approach with corpus linguistics method from McEnery & Hardie (2011)`s theory which is connected with Levinson's (1983) theory about deixis. The results of the analysis found that 2.615 data contain of deixis. There are 1.451 data categorized as person deixis, 342 data categorized as time deixis, 114 data categorized as place deixis, 582 data categorized as discourse deixis, and 116 data categorized as social deixis. Person deixis is most popular in this data because in the interviews Muhammad Ali talk about himself and his experience. The middle are time deixis and discourse deixis because in the interview they used time deixis to talk about past, present and future time. They used discourse deixis to signal a relationship between an utterance and the prior or subsequent discourse. The least are place deixis and social deixis because in the interview they did not mention many of places and social situations that exist in the interviews. In conclusion, deixis in Muhammad Ali`s interview about being Muslim refers to the use of words whose reference always changes depending on the context. Deixis plays an important role as it allows us to relate language to the situation and context in which it is used.
