Abstract

Jargon is a specialized word or phrase that is used in a certain community which is understood only by people who are part of the community. People outside the community or people who are new to the community might have difficulties understanding the jargon. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research related to this topic, with the aim of analyzing the forms and functions of jargon on Formula 1 Twitter (X) account. This research used a qualitative method and the theory used to analyze the data were from Halligan (2004) and Brown and Attardo (2005). Based on the data analysis, the findings showed that there were 53 data that were analyzed in this research. The forms of jargon found on Formula 1 Twitter (X) account were phrase (24 data), word (21 data), abbreviation (8 data) but there was no jargon found in the form of acronym on Formula 1 Twitter (X) account. Meanwhile, the functions of the jargon found were jargon that were used to provide speakers of specialized domains with clear, unambiguous terms to refer to their activities (41 data) and jargon that were used to provide speakers of a subgroup with a means of marking in-group membership and excluding outsiders (12 data). According to the findings of the data analysis, the result showed that jargon in the form of phrases is used more often as it gives more detail about the jargon. Meanwhile, the function of the jargon is mostly to facilitate the community with terms that can make the discussion more effective and easy to understand.
