Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the form of ideological control emerges as heteronormative norm in the novel Maurice by E.M. Forster through the perspective of class-consciousness Marxist, using Eagleton’s Ideology theory. This study employs a qualitative method with a mimetic approach, with gathering data through quotes, narration, and dialogue from Maurice's novel. Set in Victorian to Edwardian England, the novel features a character with a homosexual identity, prompting this research as the character's non-conformity to heteronormative standards leads to an internal struggle to adapt to his environment and influences the dynamics of character relationships. This issue arises the research objectives: firstly, to identify forms of heteronormative representation as ideological control, and secondly, to discover acts of revolution against the ideological control of heteronormativity as a societal norm. The findings categorize heteronormative norms as ideological control into three types: those stemming from religious dogma, the hegemony of masculinity in public schools, and the discourse on sexuality. Additionally, the analysis reveals that each social class—aristocrats, bourgeoisie, and proletariat, as represented by homosexual characters—has a distinct stance on opposing heteronormative norms. Consequently, this study elucidates the causal relationship between class standing within social strata and the dominant norms, which in turn impacts the lives of characters during the Victorian to Edwardian era as depicted in Maurice.
