Abstract

In the process of communication, using just one language is often insufficient to convey all the necessary information for complete understanding. This highlights the importance of understanding sociolinguistics, particularly in the context of bilingualism and the phenomenon of code-mixing. This research examines the types and functions of code-mixing based on Hoffmann's (1991) theory in the video podcast titled Livy Renata | Annya And The Tea Box on Alter Tv's YouTube Channel. The method used in this research is qualitative method. Qualitative method is a research approach that focuses on understanding social phenomena (Creswell, 2014). The results of the research show a total of 133 data on code-mixing. The intra-sentential code-mixing type is the most dominant, with 120 data, this is because intra-sentential code-mixing type involves elements like words, phrases, and clauses, which are easier to remember and use in conversation. Furthermore, regarding the functions of code-mixing, the functions of talking about a particular topic and expressing group identity are the most frequently found, each with 46 data. This is because the topics in conversation often include terms that are more familiar and easier to express in another language, especially in English.
