Abstract

In our everyday lives, we navigate social interactions using different strategies to express ourselves and maintain positive relationships with others. Politeness plays a crucial role in shaping our language choices and how we interact with people. This research analyzed the use of politeness strategies and the factors influencing politeness strategies used by Taylor Swift in Miss Americana: Behind the Stage. This research addressed two statements of problem: (1) What are the politeness strategies used by Taylor Swift in Miss Americana: Behind the Stage? and (2) What are the factors influencing the politeness strategies used by Taylor Swift in Miss Americana: Behind the Stage? To answer these questions, the researcher applied the theory of politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987) using a qualitative approach. Based on the findings, the analysis revealed a total of 5 out of 103 data involved bald-on-record strategies, 63 involved positive politeness strategies, 22 involved negative politeness strategies, and 13 involved off-record strategies. Furthermore, the use of politeness strategies was influenced by factors such as payoffs and circumstance: sociological variables. The findings showed that Taylor Swift mainly used positive politeness strategies to create a friendly and warm connection with those she interacted with behind the stage, reflecting her desire to maintain and improve social harmony.
