Abstract
This research focuses on identifying and describing types of turn taking irregularities and various purposes for carrying out turn taking irregularities in Andrew Tate's interviews with George Janko. This research uses the turn-taking irregularities theory from Zimmerman and West (1975), supported by Murata's (1994) theory regarding types of interruptions, Jefferson's (1983) theory regarding types of overlap, and uses the theories of Kennedy & Camden (1983), and Cook & Tannen (1989) for the purpose of using interruptions and overlap. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research type with a conversation analysis approach. The results of the research showed that turn taking irregularities occurred 56 times and each type of turn taking irregularities was dominated by interruptions and the purpose of turn taking irregularities was dominant by floor talking. The research identified that George Janko made a lot of intrusive interruptions, on the other hand more overlap appears with the transitional type which could occur in the end of a speech, this shows that the interview participants played out the dynamic flow of the conversation with each other. This study is expected to be used as knowledge and insight for readers and future researchers who want to explore similar topics, especially turn taking irregularities.
