Abstract

This dissertation explores the themes of madness and power relations in the characters of Sam Shepard's drama script Buried Child. Using focussing techniques, the study examines how madness is portrayed and how power dynamics operate between characters, influencing their actions and interactions. The analysis reveals that madness in the play is not only a personal pain but also a manifestation of the deepest dysfunctions and secrets within the family. The study uses psychoanalytic and sociological theories to provide a comprehensive understanding of the character's psychological states and social interactions. By placing Buried Child within the broader context of American literature and post-Vietnam War sentiment, the thesis offers insight into Shepard's critique of the disillusioned American dream and social norms of the 1970s.
