Abstract

The main objective of the study is to identify how gender is portrayed in the pictures and texts of an English textbook used by tenth grade high school students. It is also to determine whether there was any gender bias in the textbook. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach with content analysis techniques. All units of the English textbook “Work in Progress” for 10th grade high school students are the data sources of this study. The researcher used Amini and Birjandi’s (2012) categories; Visibility, Activity, Occupation, Firstness, and Feminine/Masculine Generic Construction as the analysis tool. The results showed that (1) gender representation in the picture is more dominated by men with 87 mentions (72%) compared to women who only appear 34 times (28%), (2) gender representation in the text shows that the number of mentions of male and female in the text in this textbook is almost equal (male: 52% and female: 48%), and (3) based on the percentage of male and female as a whole, it is found that this textbook prioritizes men over women (male: 58% and female: 42%). The study concludes that there is gender bias in this textbook. Therefore, English textbook writers should include a balanced representation of men and women in the pictures. Future researchers should conduct research on analyzing the themes or topics in the textbooks whether the units or chapters in the textbooks are only devoted to one gender or not.
