Abstract
An essay is kind of writing skills, has a single topic, and divided into some paragraphs. To make one paragraph in essay, it contains words, phrases, clause, and sentence structure. This study will focus on phrases structure especially in constituent relationship. Constituent relationship is divided into endocentric and exocentric. Therefore, this study aims are to investigate endocentric and exocentric phrases in their essay writing. This study used case study methods and qualitative design. Qualitative research is intended to investigate the human aspects of a given issue, with specialized methods employed to investigate how people see and feel the world (Given, 2008). The participants of this study are ten senior year students, eight semesters of the English Education Department in Islamic State University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The results of this study demonstrate that EFL students are use the two kinds of constituent relationship in their essay. It showed that the overall result from students’ exocentric phrases is more dominant than endocentric phrases with total of all endocentric phrases is 252 phrases and the total of all exocentric phrases is 295 phrases. Moreover, this study also found some students’ challenge in writing both of phrases. Endocentric is more challenging rather than exocentric for them to write. They are found it difficult in using attributive and appositive endocentric phrases.
