Abstract

The hero represents that part of us that recognizes problems and accepts responsibility, the antihero is the will to power and insatiable greed, the materialistic, power hungry, tyrannical side of our natures; the side that wants to possess everything it desires, without limit, and control everything it needs. The story may have grown in one of many directions. This paper examines the theme of ambiguity if that represent of anti-hero in the movie titled Hacksaw Ridge to discover the layers of meaning or interpretation of ambiguity. In order to identify the interpretations of ambiguity of anti-hero in Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge Movie, there are two main problems in this research; the first one is the characterization of main character in the movie and the second one is the ambiguity that generates a provisional interpretation of anti-hero. Thus, objective approach was used in this research. This research used that method because it is appropriate to the objectives of the research which is focus on the character and characteristic of the anti-hero and it commonly appear in many stories whereas books or movies. The research method is descriptive which is conducted with descriptive qualitative analysis and objective criticism. The result of this research shows that in this movie an ambiguity of anti-hero was shown clearly. The ambiguity of anti-hero is shows in this stories, mostly anti-hero plays a role as a partner of hero. He helps in many ways either in the movie they have been teamed up or they become a team without any willfulness. But, in this movie the roles of hero and anti-hero was played by a person that is Desmond Doss as the main character. Desmond Doss did not strength but he also did not weak at all. On the other hand, the ambiguity analysis shows many possibilities of interpretation of those characters of hero and anti-hero.
