Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and functions of presupposition used by Anies Baswedan in an interview with ABC News Australia. The researcher formulated two research questions: 1. What are the presuppositions appear that Anies Baswedan used in an interview with ABC News Australia? 2. How are those presuppositions used by Anies Baswedan in an interview with ABC News Australia? To answer these questions, the researcher uses Yule's (1996) theory of presupposition. The study employed a qualitative methods approach and linguistic corpus analysis. Data were collected from YouTube based on findings from the transcript, categorized by types of presupposition, analyzed to determine their functions, and concluded. The result shows that out of 162 presupposition data, there are 106 existential type as the most used type that caused by the many utterances mention definite noun phrases, possessive adjectives, and proper names. Then followed by 21 non-factive type that shows something related to dream and hope and 12 structural type that contains interrogative sentences. Then, there are 11 lexical type that shows something that used to happen in the past, 8 counterfactual type that shows opposites from the fact, and 4 factive type as the least used since it shows utterances that contains factive verbs.
