Abstract
An illocutionary act is a type of speech act that involves the speaker performing a specific kind of action through their utterance. This action is not limited to simply stating something but rather involves the speaker intending to achieve a particular effect or outcome through their words. The research aimed to find out the types and functions of illocutionary acts used in English Webtoon Lookism Season 1. This research used theories from John R. Searle (1969). The study employed a qualitative method approach to identify and analyze the quality understanding about illocutionary acts in selected utterances among the characters. The findings concluded that all five types of Searle’s illocutionary acts are present in 176 utterances, with 39 representatives, 66 directives, 52 expressives, 16 commissives, and 3 declaratives. Meanwhile, the functions of illocutionary act found in this research included the functions of representative (30 asserting, 5 describing, and 1 claiming), directive (51 commanding, 5 requesting, 8 questioning, and 2 advising), expressive (5 thanking, 7 apologizing, 1 blaming and 8 praising), commissive (7 promising and 4 offering), and declarative (3 declaring condition). The research concluded that the most dominant type used in English Webtoon Lookism Season 1 is directive illocutionary act. Through the use of directives, webtoon authors can effectively show how characters influence each other and try to achieve their goals, whether through direct commands, subtle requests, or questions that provoke certain responses. This shows that in Lookism's storyline, language functions not only as a means of communication, but also as an instrument to manipulate and control the storyline and character development.
