Abstract

A Preposition is a front word that is used to connect a noun, pronoun, or phrase with another part of the sentence. This research focuses on analyzing prepositions in English and Sundanese, namely several prepositional sentence structure are analyzed. Therefore, this research raises three problems relacted to; (1) Types of English and Sundanese preposition; (2) The position English and Sundanese preposition; (3) Differences and simirilarities between the two language. The comparative qualitative method is used to analyze data from textual context. A total of 90 preposition characteristics were found from the total data submitted by each characteristic : 36 English preposition data, 12 Sundanese preposition data. The result of the research showed that there are four types of English preposition: location, direction, temporal, and cause. In Sundanese preposition there are three types of preposition found in the data: location, direction, and time. The position in English preposition are shown through the Patterns: V+ prep + N/NP, V+pro+prep+N/NP, V+adv+prep+N/NP. The position in Sundanese preposition are shown through the Patterns V+ Prep+N/NP, V+ Prep+V+N/NP, V+adj+ prep+ N/NP. The difference between English and Sundanese preposition are in the position of the preposition where in English the preposition can be placed after the verb, the pronoun and the adverb, whill in Sundanese the preposition can be placed only after the verb or adjective. The similarity between English and Sundanese preposition are both prepositions mostly placed after the verb.
