Abstract

This study examines how the Pancasila Student Profile (PSP) characteristics are represented in the Pathway to English textbook for 10th-grade students in Indonesia, which follows the Merdeka Curriculum. Using multimodal analysis, the research investigates both visual and textual elements to identify the integration of PSP characteristics such as faith, piety, global diversity, mutual cooperation, independence, critical reasoning, and creativity. The study used a qualitative approach with document analysis design, analyzes selected reading texts, dialogues, and images from the textbook using Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) framework for multimodal discourse analysis to see what characteristics are contained in the selected reading texts, dialogues, and images. The findings reveal that the textbook successfully incorporates PSP characteristics across various content types, though with varying degrees of explicitness. The research identifies examples of how cultural values, collaborative tasks, critical thinking, and visual representations align with PSP objectives. The multimodal approach is found to enhance students' comprehension by combining textual information with supporting images. This study contributes to understanding how character education, particularly PSP characteristics, can be integrated into language learning materials. It also highlights the importance of multimodal analysis in evaluating educational resources. The research concludes that the Pathway to English textbook serves as an effective tool for fostering both English language proficiency and character development in line with Indonesia's educational goals. Recommendations are provided for textbook authors, EFL teachers, and future researchers to further enhance the integration and effectiveness of PSP characteristics in educational materials.
