Abstract
This undergraduate thesis explores how the media portrays and manipulates information concerning halal concerns regarding COVID-19 vaccines in selected Reuters' news articles. Utilizing Suzanne Eggins' Theory of Theme and Rheme alongside McCornack's Information Manipulation Theory (IMT), the study delves into the themes and rhemes presented in the news articles and analyzes the ways in which the media manipulates information to address halal concerns. Through a comprehensive analysis of 10 articles and 60 data points, the research identifies patterns of selective emphasis, attribution, omission, and framing employed by media outlets. The findings reveal that the media strategically shape narratives to influence public opinion on the halal status of COVID-19 vaccines, emphasizing certain aspects such as controversies, official statements, and public reactions while omitting alternative perspectives or counterarguments. The combination of thematic analysis and information manipulation theory offers valuable insights into the mechanisms through which media outlets shape discourse on important issues, highlighting the need for critical media literacy and discernment among audiences.
