Abstract

This research uses a novel entitled Qolbu Al-lail by Naguib Mahfouz. As a source of research data. This novel is interesting to study because in addition to discussing social and political conflicts, the novel also has the phenomenon of collective unconsciousness of the characters. This research aims to analyse the collective unconscious in the novel Qolbu Al-lail by Naguib Mahfouz through Carl Gustav Jung's psychoanalysis approach. Archetypes are the content of the collective unconscious, which is the innate form of the psyche, a pattern of psychic behaviour that always exists potentially as a possibility and when realised appears as a specific image. The form of archetypes in Jung's theory includes persona, shadow, anima, and animus, and self. The method used in this research is a qualitative method based on descriptive data. From the results of the study found: (1) Persona reflections of several characters that display the personalities that they themselves want to form. (2) The shadow reflection that makes an unfavourable impression on some characters. (3) Anima reflection of some female characters that show the masculine side and logos. (4) Reflection of self in Al-Rawi and Ja'far who feel that they are the most righteous.
