Abstract

This research analyzed the representation of horror through figurative language in Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and identified the differences and similarities between Neil Gaiman and Charles Dickens in using figurative language to represent horror in their work. This research adopts the objective and comparative approach and uses the qualitative method for collecting the data. In analyzing how horror elements are interpreted through figurative language, the researcher applied the theory of figurative language from Johnson and Arp, the theory of Horror Genre from Saricks and Clasen, the theory of Children’s literature from Peter Hunt, Huck, and Stoodt. The researcher has collected 36 data in total, with 17 derived from Coraline and 19 from A Christmas CaroI, with a particular focus on the use of figurative language such as simile, personification, and metaphor. The result indicates that Neil Gaiman and Charles Dickens represent horror elements in children’s literature with a more subtle and familiar manner through the use of figurative language. It shows that figurative language is the effective instrument to represent horror in a more friendly manner, allowing things, such as fear, darkness, and other horror elements, through language or images that are easier to understand by readers, especially young readers. The main difference between the Neil Gaiman and Charles Dickens in using figurative language to represent horror in their work lies in the focus of the figurative language utilization. Gaiman tends to use figurative language to represent the physical aspect of supernatural creatures in detail and highlighting their creepy appearance. In contrast, Charles Dickens tends to use it to construct the atmosphere that supports the tone and mood of horror. Therefore, the elements of horror that are most represented through figurative language in both works are the characters and the atmosphere.
